Panasonic’s smart shopping basket calculates your bill and bags your items Panasonic is joining the race to automate grocery store checkouts. Just one week after Amazon unveiled its cashier-free convenience store, the Japan-based electronics maker today showed off its own solution with a checkout machine that can detect items in your shopping cart, tally the bill, and automatically bag those items. As detailed by The Wall Street Journal, Panasonic’s system would use a basket that scans items outfitted with electronic tags as they’re being put inside. When a customer checks out, they place their basket on a machine where the bottom of the basket slides out. The items inside are gently dropped into a plastic bag while the customer pays the bill. The goal is to help save time rather than eliminate the need for... Continue reading…

Uber employees secretly tracked politicians and celebrities, lawsuit claims Uber employees used the company’s lax tracking system to monitor the whereabouts of “high profile politicians, celebrities, and even personal acquaintances,” according to a declaration in a lawsuit filed against Uber by its former forensic investigator. Former forensic investigator filed suit The lawsuit was revealed today by a Center for Investigative Reporting article detailing security standards at the company. The article also cites former employees who say “thousands” of employees had access to Uber’s tracking data, as well as personal information on other employees and drivers, with few protections in place to prevent improper access and misuse. The lawsuit was filed by Ward Spangenberg, who worked on security systems at Uber... Continue reading…

Trump’s pick for interior secretary could open up federal land to oil and gas drilling President-elect Donald Trump is expected to pick Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) to lead the Interior Department, according to The New York Times. If confirmed by the Senate, she’s expected to open up federal land and waters to oil, gas, and coal extraction, as well as undo environmental policies approved under the Obama administration. Rodgers is the highest-ranking Republican woman in the House of Representatives. She was also appointed to serve as vice chair of Trump’s transition team. Since she was first elected to Congress in 2004, Rodgers supported legislation to open up the Atlantic Ocean to oil and natural-gas drilling and to prevent the Department of the Interior from regulating fracking, according to The Wall Street Journal.... The Walking Dead Redemption Club season 7, episode 8: Hearts Still Beating AMC’s The Walking Dead has an uncanny knack for manipulating its audience, but this year’s hyper-violent season premiere went too far. So far that we canceled our ongoing series The Walking Dead Quitter’s Club, and co-author Bryan Bishop swore off the show entirely. Ever since, Nick Statt has been trying to change his mind. Instead of tearing the show down, Nick’s been finding something to highlight. Sometimes it’s been a subtle change in character; others a great action scene, or a new development in a narrative arc. But every episode, Nick has sought out the things that remind us of the very best of The Walking Dead. This week, he convinced Bryan to come back. Welcome to The Walking Dead Redemption Club. Bryan Bishop: Tap-tap-tap. Is... Continue reading…

Microsoft: more people are switching from Macs to Surface than ever before Microsoft has been targeting Mac users with its Surface commercials recently, and it appears they might be paying off. The software giant claims that November was the “best month ever for consumer Surface sales,” following a number of Black Friday deals on the Surface Pro 4. Microsoft still isn’t providing sales numbers, but the company claims “more people are switching from Macs to Surface than ever before.” Microsoft blames “the disappointment of the new MacBook Pro” and its trade-in program for MacBooks for tempting people to switch to Surface. Again, Microsoft refuses to provide numbers but vaguely claims “our trade-in program for MacBooks was our best ever.” Alongside the Surface sales, Microsoft is also expanding on the... HP Spectre x360 review: the best Windows laptop of 2016 Building a great, premium laptop is surprisingly hard. Despite the fact that every company, from Apple to Dell to Lenovo and everyone in between, pulls from the same basic parts bin — Intel processors; high-quality IPS displays; aluminum chassis; large, glass trackpads; USB Type-C ports with Thunderbolt 3 — putting all of those parts together in a competent, no-compromise laptop is a sadly rare feat. That’s what makes HP’s latest Spectre x360 so interesting. It has the same basic spec sheet as countless other laptops, and from a distance, even looks similar to many others. But in a year that’s been full of laptop disappointments, the Spectre x360’s cohesive design and lack of compromises has been a breath of fresh air. The Spectre x360... Continue reading…

Skype’s real-time translation now works for calls to mobiles and landlines Skype is expanding the availability of its real-time translation feature, integrating the tool with calls made to mobile phones and landlines. Previously, the translation feature, which began rolling out to users back in 2014, only worked for Skype-to-Skype calls. Users will still need three things to access the tool, though: they’ll need to be signed up to the (free) Windows Insider Program; they’ll need the latest beta of the Skype app (Skype Preview) downloaded; and they’ll need some some paid Skype credits. The translation will work just like it does with regular Skype calls. You bring up the dialer, toggle the switch marked “Translate,” and then select the languages. When the person on the other side picks up, they’ll be played a... Continue reading…

Apple introduces ‘report junk’ option to deal with iCloud calendar spam In recent weeks, Apple users have reported an increase in the amount of spam invites they’ve been receiving in their iCloud calendars. Spammers have been inserting invites into users’ schedules, with the title usually advertising some unwanted sale or product. Apple has promised it’s working on a fix, and the company’s first step is to apparently introducing a new “report junk” option in the iCloud calendar web app. According to 9to5Mac, this option now appears under the “from” field in calendar invites sent by strangers. When you report an invite it will be deleted across all synced calendars, but, at the moment, you’ll have to visit the iCloud calendar web app in your browser to do so. The “report junk” feature doesn’t yet seem to be... Continue reading…

Super Nintendo World is coming to Universal Studios Japan by 2020 Nintendo announced a tie-up with Universal Studios last year, and since then it's been confirmed that the parks in Osaka, Orlando, and Hollywood will eventually see areas with Nintendo-themed attractions. Nintendo says that Super Nintendo World will feature “attractions based on many Nintendo titles.” The picture posted above looks pretty heavy on Mario imagery, but then it doesn't look very crowded, so anyone who's been to Universal Studios Japan will probably assume that some degree of artistic license is being employed. A rocket will launch from the belly of an airplane tomorrow, sending eight NASA satellites into orbit Tomorrow, NASA will attempt to launch eight small satellites to space on board a Pegasus XL rocket, manufactured by private spaceflight company Orbital ATK. Called the CYGNSS mission, the probes are meant to study various aspects of tropical storms and hurricanes from orbit, in order to help scientists better understand how these cyclones form. But launching these satellites into orbit won’t look like your typical trip to space, where a rocket takes off vertically from a launch pad on the ground. Instead, this launch will take place in the air. The Pegasus XL rocket launches after being dropped from the belly of an airplane That’s because the Pegasus XL rocket launches after being dropped from the belly of an airplane. First, Orbital’s... What Star Wars learned from its prequel problem Rogue One, hitting theaters next week, is an experiment on the part of Lucasfilm to see if the Star Wars franchise can survive without having a Skywalker starring in a central role. Described as standalone films, they have the potential to tell different types of stories than the backbone films of the saga. But both Rogue One and the as-of-yet-untitled Han Solo film could also run into familiar problem: they’re prequels. And when it comes to prequels, Star Wars has history. When George Lucas announced that he would be returning to the Star Wars universe with 1999’s Episode I: The Phantom Menace, fans were ecstatic to finally learn how the galaxy got to the the first Star Wars film, 1977’s A New Hope. While The Phantom Menace was highly... Continue reading…

Bank and credit card apps are starting to get pretty good When did banking apps from the big finance giants suddenly get good? Lately I’m finding the various money-related apps on my phone (Bank of America, Citibank, Capital One) to be genuinely helpful and capable of things that they couldn’t do even a year ago. They’re even becoming intuitive. I can temporarily lock my debit card if I’ve misplaced it but am not yet convinced it’s lost. I can activate replacement cards with a tap — something that always required a call to an automated telephone line. And then you’ve got the usual stuff: automated payments, transferring money, ordering checks, and snapping a photo of a check for instant deposit. That last trick was something cool that many banking apps could do in the days when they were... Continue reading…

What’s the right price for a VR game? Nobody seems to know The last time I clearly remember saying a non-VR game was “worth the price,” it was 2013. The game was The Swapper, and I remember because game developer Jon Blow went on a Twitter rant about the turn of phrase soon after, which may or may not have been directed at me. Regardless, I figured he was right: people were more than capable of reading my work and calibrating it to their own spending habits. If film and TV critics didn’t have to judge a work’s aesthetic value against its dollar value, I shouldn’t either. Three years later, though, I find myself checking prices just about every time I recommend a virtual reality experience. This is decent VR, I ask myself, but is it really ten dollar VR? $20? $40? This evaluation feels... Continue reading…

The sequel to Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth will premiere in January Al Gore released his climate change documentary, An Inconvenient Truth back in 2006, and just over a decade later, he’s set to premiere a sequel at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19th. The new film will follow his efforts during those 10 years to bring awareness to our changing climate. “Now more than ever we must rededicate ourselves to solving the climate crisis” Variety reports that the sequel will be directed by Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk, and that it will be released in theaters sometime in 2017. “Now more than ever we must rededicate ourselves to solving the climate crisis,” Gore noted in a statement, “But we have reason to be hopeful; the solutions to the crisis are at hand.” The film will premiere during Sundance’s The... No Bothans died in the making of Rogue One Rogue One: A Star Wars Story comes out next week, and unless you've been living under a rock, you probably know that the movie involves the theft of the plans for the Death Star. There's also a chance that you've wondered if this movie will finally explain what a Bothan is, and why many of them died to bring you this information. There are no Bothans in Rogue One But we here at The Verge would like to correct this misconception. Rogue One details the story of Jyn Erso and her band of Bothan-less misfits stealing the plans to the FIRST Death Star, sometime before Episode IV: A New Hope. It is crucial to note that — as far as we are currently aware — there are no Bothans in this film (dead or otherwise.) These plans then somehow make... Continue reading…

After months without sleep, binge watching became my remedy In 2016, 4AM became a close friend. I’d awake with no provocation, roll over to check my phone, and mutter a string of my favorite swears. My insomnia was as reliable as it was frustrating, but it was unusual for me, too. All my life, I’d bragged about my ability to fall into a deep, coma-like state wherever, whenever, rivaled only by the dead. These sleepless weeks stretched into months. Desperate to put an end to my wakeful nights, I stocked up on melatonin, invested in an aromatherapy machine with oil scents that promised to waft me into slumber, and downloaded a few ambient sound apps with high hopes for fuzzy background noise. I researched sleeping pills but didn’t trust myself with the habit. I cut coffee and drank more water. I... Continue reading…

What happened to Obama’s $4 billion in computer science funding? Back in January, President Obama asked Congress to set aside $4 billion for computer science education, in what would have been the federal government’s largest targeted funding for promoting the subject in schools. The proposal seemed designed to generate more headlines than actual funding — and now, nearly a year down the road, that largely seems to be what’s happened. In a release on Monday highlighting what the administration’s “Computer Science for All” initiative has accomplished this year, the White House presented a long list of actions taken by states, cities, businesses, and nonprofits. In fact, few of those achievements stemmed from the federal government’s direct involvement. Congress never set aside the requested $4 billion,... Continue reading…

What’s standing between Donald Trump and nuclear war? When President-elect Donald Trump officially becomes the president of the United States in January, he will take complete control of America’s nuclear arsenal. Should he decide to start a nuclear war, there are no legal safeguards to stop him. Instead, a much less tangible web of norms, taboos, and fears has reined in US presidents since World War II. But as North Korea escalates its nuclear weapons tests and the president-elect of the United States openly contemplates using nukes, experts worry that this fragile web could start to tear. This fragile web could start to tear During his campaign, Trump called nuclear proliferation the “biggest problem” in the world. But he also said that Japan and South Korea might want to get nukes of... Continue reading…

Proof that you've been mispronouncing Porsche all along Porsche is a two syllable word that is often made into one. I speak rudimentary German and had a German-Jewish Opa who sharpened my ear to the flow of the guttural language as an infant. The Oxford Dictionary pronunciation is ˈpôrSH(É™). But I have heard many a “Porsh” argument by people who know much more about cars than they know about languages. American ignorance on this topic is understandable, even from people who own a Porsche or 911, and still say “Porsh.” It’s a perfectly understandable mistake. German is only the world’s tenth most spoken language. Many more people speak Hindi, Portuguese, and Russian. The Oxford Dictional pronunciation is ˈpôrSH(É™) Porsche was named after Ferdinand Porsche, an automotive engineer who founded... Continue reading…

Dating apps have made saving phone numbers complicated My name wasn’t Ashley Carman anymore. It was . Yes, a guy I dated last summer saved me in his phone as a fishcake emoji. We met on Tinder and the first thing I messaged him was the fishcake. I thought it was cute or something. I don’t know — I didn’t expect it to become my identity. To be fair, I didn’t save his name in my phone until we had been hanging out for a month because I don’t save numbers unless I know a guy’s last name, or I intend to see him again. Did I mention I used a burner number when we first met? I assume a lot of people are like me in this way. Online dating has created a strange predicament where daters know a person’s first name but often little else. If they want to connect off an app, they have to get a person’s... New trailers: Spider-Man, Transformers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and more I usually use this space to write a little something about what I've been watching lately, but this week I kind of just want to ask: why on Earth did every movie studio suddenly decide to release a trailer for its biggest upcoming films? This week has been filled with blockbuster after blockbuster. My best guess is that studios are preparing for the holidays, when plenty of people will be headed to theaters with their families. It’s prime time to prime people for the big and flashy spring and summer movies that are meant to draw huge crowds. So if you're used to just looking at the top three trailers of the week... don't do that this time because nearly all of these are for enormous blockbuster films. Check out 11 from this week below. There’s now a NASA GIF for every feel you ever have This week, NASA continued its spread into the social media sphere by announcing two new accounts — one on Giphy and one on Pinterest. Seeing as how I had forgotten of Pinterest’s existence, half of this announcement matters very little to me. But the other half is very critical to my interests! It’s a brilliant move on NASA’s part, because sometimes astronauts, rockets, and artistic renderings of space are the only ways to truly express your feels. And as someone who writes about space and who communicates primarily with moving images that last just a few seconds in length, a NASA Giphy account is basically an entire dictionary for me. Plus, I haven’t yet mastered making my own GIFs with GIF Brewery, so this makes life a whole lot... Continue reading…

This was a good year for weird jazz 2016 was a really good year for weird jazz! Not good in the sense of commercial success or cultural impact — but for a genre that arguably peaked decades ago, there was a surprising amount of good, weird jazz coming out this year. A lot of it is still fundamentally upsetting when you listen to it, but in a sort of good way? Here are my three favorites of the year, which I also forced Lizzie to listen to: Shabaka & the Ancestors - Wisdom of Elders Easily my favorite weird jazz album of the year! Shabaka Hutchings is a British-Barbadoan sax player who’s won a ton of UK awards over the past few years. This album saw him putting together a band in South Africa and getting really into Sun Ra. The result is basically updated Afrofuturist free... Continue reading…

To that I say: thank goodness. Instead, we get a delightful guide on how to style your food in the most kawaii of ways, whether it’s a “Pikachu Happy Face Cake” or “Meowth Mashed Potatoes,” in which Meowth’s arms are made of cauliflower. Unlike the also-recently-released World of Warcraft cookbook, which features hearty recipes worthy of a feast, the Pokémon cookbook features light bites and cutely styled food that’s too precious to eat. Boosted asks regulators to help handle its smoking electric skateboard problem Boosted has turned to federal regulators to help handle the investigation into two battery failures on its electric skateboards last month. Boosted reported its short circuit problems to the Consumer Production Safety Commission, according to a statement issued on its website and social media accounts. The California-based startup stopped shipping units of its second-generation Boosted Board after two users reported smoking batteries in early November. Boosted also told customers who had already received the board to stop riding until a fix was found. The CPSC led investigations earlier this year into the battery problems that plagued the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 and a number of different hoverboard companies. Both cases resulted in... Russia actively tried to help Donald Trump win the election, CIA report says A secret assessment conducted by the CIA determined that Russia’s interference in the 2016 election was intended to help put Donald Trump in office, The Washington Post reported this evening, using anonymous sources. The revelations undermine the position of President-elect Trump’s campaign, which has sought to downplay reports of foreign interference by citing a lack of evidence. They also mark a stark escalation in hostility between the US and Russia. It appears to be unprecedented that a foreign government used espionage tactics in a US election cycle to try and influence the outcome of a race. Russia’s DNC hack was designed to elevate Trump and hurt Clinton The U.S. Intelligence Community — which is made up of 16 different... Continue reading…

Google is replacing Flash in Chrome once and for all Google told us in May that it would eventually block Adobe Flash Player content on Chrome. And today, the company is making good on its promise. Google is slowly rolling HTML5 out to users over the next couple of months, starting with one percent of users on the current version of Chrome. Everyone should have an updated Chrome by February, when the most recent beta version goes stable. This means that unless a website has an HTML5 content player, the Flash content won’t display. Users will have to enable it manually on a site-by-site basis. At first, the Flash permissions will only apply to sites that users are visiting for the first time, but by October, every site will require user permission to run Flash. Google isn’t the first... Spotify wants to bring on-demand features to its free mobile users Spotify is testing a new feature called Jump In that would let its free mobile users get on-demand features in certain playlist, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the situation. Spotify would roll back its shuffle-only mandate on the free tier — at least partially — allowing mobile users to choose what song they want to listen to in select playlists. That would be a substantial improvement for free users, who currently have to hope shuffle algorithm works in their favor if they want to hear a certain song in a playlist or album. Spotify is considering rolling out the feature in the next few weeks, but will have to deal with its music industry partners first. Will Jump In gain approval from the music labels? Spotify... Spectral review: Netflix’s new movie is Gears of War meets Aliens, on the cheap Back in June 2016, the news broke that distribution company Universal Pictures had pulled Spectral, a science-fiction thriller with a strong video-game flavor, from its fall release roster. Spectral’s production company, Legendary, had also handled the game-to-film adaptation of Warcraft, and industry insiders speculated that Warcraft’s North American box-office failure might have made Universal leery. Alternately, it might have just limited the budget Universal wanted to devote to another Legendary release. There are a lot of possible factors, some weedier than others, including a 2016 film slate glutted with science fiction and fantasy, and the newness of Legendary’s relationship with Universal, given that the former had just left its... The latest list features cars from Audi, Honda, Mitsubishi, and Volkswagen, including vehicles that are already on the market, and some 2017 models. You can check the full list here. Watch the first Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer The first trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming debuted on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, giving us a clear look at how well leading man Tom Holland can handle himself in the ol’ red and blue pajamas. The trailer follows Spider-Man as he interrupts a bank robbery, perches on tall buildings, and takes life advice from Tony Stark. We also get a glimpse of Jon Favreau as Tony Stark’s body man Happy Hogan and of Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes / Vulture. Spider-Man: Homecoming is the latest restart for the character since Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man films, and is the second Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance for Peter Parker following last year’s Captain America: Civil War. We thought he was great, even if we weren’t entirely sure if he... Continue reading…

Twitter reverses update that 'accidentally' killed the @ symbol in replies If you were using Twitter this evening and noticed a distinct lack of @-symbols in your mentions, you weren't alone. Twitter has confirmed that it 'accidentally' pushed an 'experiment around replies' to all iOS users, removing the conventional username signifier from the start of replies and making usernames no longer count toward character limit. The update has now been rolled back after what seemed to be a broadly negative reception. “Upside, we got helpful feedback,” Twitter says. “We’re listening!” But it may not be totally gone forever, as a similar feature was actually announced back in May — for whatever reason, it’s just taken this long to spread to a wider audience than Twitter’s usual small test groups. “[Users] have to learn... This dinosaur tail in amber reminds birds of their once and future empire For the first time, the feathered tail of a 99-million-year-old dinosaur has been found preserved in amber. That would be plenty exciting, but there’s more: this dinosaur had feathers. The tiny feathered dino was no bigger than a sparrow The 1.4-inch tail, described in a paper published today in the journal Current Biology, is part of a treasure trove of fossils that paleontologist Lida Xing from the China University of Geosciences discovered last year at an amber market in Myanmar, in Southeast Asia. The tail most likely belongs to a tiny feathered dino that was no bigger than a sparrow. The tail is so small that it suggests the dinosaur was a juvenile; the animal likely died in northwest Myanmar before tree resin encased its tail. T... Continue reading…

Magic Leap is actually way behind, like we always suspected it was Magic Leap’s allegedly revolutionary augmented reality technology may in fact be years away from completion and, as it stands now, is noticeably inferior to Microsoft’s HoloLens headset, according to a report from The Information. The report, which incorporates an interview with Magic Leap CEO Rony Abovitz, reveals that the company posted a misleading product demo last year showcasing its technology. The company has also had trouble miniaturizing its AR technology from a bulky helmet-sized device into a pair of everyday glasses, as Abovitz has repeatedly claimed the finished product will accomplish. Magic Leap lied about a video demonstration of its tech The revelations undermine one of the most secretive startups in the technology... Continue reading…

President-elect Trump is still an executive producer for Celebrity Apprentice As yet another potential example on the long list of conflicts of interest facing Donald Trump, Variety reports that the President-elect will keep his executive producer credit for the upcoming season of Celebrity Apprentice on NBC, complete with payment. The news serves as one more reminder that the soon-to-be-commander-in-chief is a reality TV star first and political figure second, and will profit accordingly. The New Celebrity Apprentice will debut on January 2nd — 18 days before Inauguration Day — and run for an eight-episode season. Trump’s name will appear in the credits with Apprentice creator Mark Burnett and new host and EP Arnold Schwarzenegger. MGM, the production company distributing the show, will handle payment to the... Continue reading…

British spies targeted the CEO of a French web hosting company In 2009, Britain’s GCHQ spying agency was actively targeting the CEO of one of Europe’s largest cloud hosting. A new report published by Le Monde (in partnership with The Intercept) found OVH CEO Octave Klaba’s name on a list of “interesting names” used as part of a metadata test by GCHQ in 2009, alongside ambassadors and politicians. It’s unclear how thoroughly Klaba was surveilled beyond that test, but the list is strong evidence that he was considered a target by intelligence agencies at the time. Klaba has not been publicly accused of espionage or any other crime, and it’s unclear why he was included on the list. Still, it’s not the first time surveillance agencies have attacked technology providers as a way of reaching their... Continue reading…

Hillary Clinton says ‘lives are at risk’ because of fake news Hillary Clinton has called for Congress and Silicon Valley to counter an “epidemic” of fake online news, after a conspiracy theorist fired a gun inside a Washington, DC pizza parlor he believed was part of a child sex trafficking ring linked to Clinton. Clinton raised the subject of “malicious fake news and false propaganda” more generally, saying it had “flooded social media over the past year.” But “it's now clear that so-called fake news can have real-world consequences,” she said. “This isn't about politics or partisanship. Lives are at risk. Lives of ordinary people just trying to go about their days to do their jobs, contribute to their communities.” Clinton remained vague in her condemnation. But the statement is seemingly a... Continue reading…

Samsung may permanently disable Galaxy Note 7 phones in the US as soon as next week Samsung appears to be planning to permanently disable Galaxy Note 7 units in the US with an update that would prevent the recalled phone from charging. According to an image obtained by The Verge, an alert went out to at least one Note 7 owner on US Cellular today stating that, “As of December 15th, Samsung will modify the software to prevent the Galaxy Note 7 from charging. The phone will no longer work.” Samsung declined to comment, and US Cellular did not respond to a request for comment. It’s not clear whether Note 7s will be disabled across the major US carriers as well, but it seems likely that’ll be the case. In the past, updates disabling Note 7 features have rolled out across Verizon, AT&T, and other carriers... Continue reading…

PewDiePie hits 50 million subscribers, promises again to delete his account YouTube’s most popular channel, PewDiePie, hit a new milestone today, crossing 50 million subscribers. Earlier this week, in a rant about how changes to the service were costing him views, PewDiePie promised to delete his channel when he hit this milestone. In a tweet today, he said the end will arrive at 5pm tomorrow. Promising to delete your channel, like announcing that you’ve decided to quit YouTube, or cancel your vlog, is not something most creators follow through on, at least not for good. But as PewDiePie put it, “complaining about YouTube gets you views.” It’s a populist punching bag that creators are only to happy to take advantage of when they are looking for a headline that will cut through the clickbait. PewDiePie is... Continue reading…

Spotify doesn't want to buy SoundCloud anymore Spotify is no longer considering to buy SoundCloud, according to reports from the Financial Times and TechCrunch. Today's news comes after earlier reports in September that Spotify was in advanced talks to acquire SoundCloud in an effort to both boost its streaming catalog and eliminate a competitor from the streaming landscape. A source for the Financial Times claims that the deal was abandoned as Spotify prepares for an IPO sometime next year, something that the streaming company did not want encumbered by the costs and licensing issues of an acquisition. All in all, it’s a sensible move from Spotify, given that the benefits of the deal seemed to be far outweighed by the cost (SoundCloud was last valued at $700 million), especially as... LinkedIn notifications in Windows will be a special kind of hell As part of Microsoft’s finalized acquisition of LinkedIn, the Windows maker this morning outlined a series of goals it has for its new social network. One of those goals includes the implementation of LinkedIn notifications in the Windows 10 Action Center, so you will never again miss the note telling you that a complete and total stranger is trying to connect with you. LinkedIn notifications will haunt you to your grave Of course, this feature will be easily to disable. But it sounds, like most aspects of LinkedIn, as if it will be as pernicious as the website’s standard disruptions of our daily lives. One cursory glance at your LinkedIn profile is like being crushed under an avalanche of ignored responsibilities. Because there’s... Continue reading…

Yik Yak lays off a ‘significant’ number of employees as growth collapses Yik Yak has laid off a “significant” number of employees amid a downturn in the app’s growth prospects, The Verge has learned. The three-year-old anonymous social network has raised $73.5 million from top-tier investors on the promise that its young, college-age network of users could one day build a company to rival Facebook. But the challenge of growing its community while moving gradually away from anonymity has so far proven to be more than the company could muster. Employees who were affected were informed of the layoffs Thursday morning, sources told The Verge. Yik Yak employed about 50 people, and sources said a “significant” number of those will no longer work at the company. The remaining employees are mostly engineers, sources... Continue reading…

Urban Outfitters is now selling horribly overpriced ‘designer’ drones As someone living in Brooklyn with a small amount of disposable income, I’ll admit to having at least a fleeting interest when I heard that Urban Outfitters would begin selling “designer” drones today. But then I looked at the drones and remembered all of the other tchotchkes Urban Outfitters sells and was immediately very disappointed in both the store and myself. The drones come from a company called TRNDlabs. They include a 2-megapixel camera for recording footage and are available “in three unique designer patterns” (blue, green, and some marbley space thing, which I guess is kind of neat). Cheap drones can be a lot of fun... when they’re cheap There’s nothing particularly fancy about the tech, which would be fine — I’ve bought and... Continue reading…
